I am amazed at how fast that eight-year-old was. Three seconds doesn't seem like such a huge time difference until you see it on the graph.

I think it's amazing how fast we Americans are compared to the 1800s. Also, it suprises me that a really fast eight year old could have finished in third place back in the 1800s.

It is quite astonishing of how fast all of the Oympic runners are and that eight year old was just a few seconds off from receiving a bronze metal... whats funny is how that eight year old could most likely fly past me and I am twice their age... Love the dedication of the runners.

I find it to be an interesting comparison. I wonder what the end result will be over time, what the final time will be when the human race reaches that border they can't cross. Being a runner, the time difference doesn't quite surprise me that much, every year new equipment comes out for athletes to train and race in: lighter shoes, less restricting uniforms, even socks that help you run better. I don't want this statement to be mistaken as a lack of appreciation, I have seen this for myself first hand and have learned that what seems as a small thing turns out to be a huge deal.

Its Cray how far we have come as human beings on the athletic scale since the 1800's. Much props to all of the Olympic athletes.

I think it is incredible how the world, Americans in particular, have accomplished this feat of athleticism. Even though I'm not a runner (clearly) I do understand what a big deal it is to be that half-a-second faster. It is awesome that people just keep taking the record over and over.

I'm surprised how much has changed over the years. Despite how minimal a few seconds may be, its a huge gap that we have made. It just goes to show how much we've improved.

It's pretty amazing to see the process of runners over the years. I know as an athlete, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become better. To see the progress in these athletes, it shows their dedication grows as well as their improvement. It's impressive to see how fast those young runners are also. I am very awed by this video.

I know I wouldn't mind running against someone from the 1800s! That is really cool to see our progress and the statistics of the 8 year old runners. But you have to give the older Olympic guys a break, because the video mentioned the improvements on the shoes, diet, track, etc. Very interesting though!

Iit really doesn't surprise me that sprinters are getting faster as time goes. With technology getting better, better understanding on nutrition and training, and people's will power getting stronger we should be getting faster as time goes.

I thought it was very interesting to see how a modern day 8 year old could have been placed 1 second off from bronze medal from a century ago. And It's pretty amazing to see how much 3 seconds could really mean.

It amazing how less than one second can put you behind on history. I give a lot credit to the 8 yr. old Olympian though; I probably could never finish a 100 yard dash in 13.46 seconds even if I had the lightest shoes or the fit well-nourished body. It takes a lot of dedication and practice, practice, practice to succeed to even become good enough to participate in the Olympics. It's remarkable to see how technology and better equipment can put you only 3 seconds faster to being the best in history.

All i can say is its inspiring to see how athletes have such willpower and determination! I saw Bolt on T.V., and lets just say he deserves to keep the name "Bolt" cause he is one fast athlete! Broke a ton of world records!

As an athlete, who also ran track, I know how much hard work and dedication it takes to be a high school athlete!!! People completely devote their lives to being Olympic athletes!! It's absolutely amazing how the times have changed not only in our culture and lifestyles but in athletesim as well. Much respect to those athletes who are Olympic runners at the age of 8 and Usain Bolt!

Its pretty cool how the graph shows us just how far we've come over the years. I found it really interesting that, even though these athletes keep breaking limit after limit to make amazing records, there was only about a 3 second difference between all of them. It makes you really rethink the significance of even just one millisecond,. It is amazing when they line up all of the Olympians from 1896 to 2012! You would think that Bolt would have beaten them all by more than just 3 seconds when you look at them all lined up together. It is very amazing to see how far these people have come since 1896.

I think kids are becoming more active at younger ages and it's better for them for health, and benefits in school for gym, and other activities inside and outside. . . And so many people train so hard all year around for the Olympics and it really shows how much time and effort they spend and i'm proud of them.

I think it is astounding how much we, Americans, have evolved over the past few decades in this sport and so many others as well. America has definitely made its mark in this event, and by the way the young athletes are performing, they are showing more promising results to much.

The olympics are a phenomenal accomplishment by ANY standard. Being HORRIBLY unathletic myself, I can't even imagine participating; much less, being the best in the world in any of these events! Athletes now are faster ,but I believe the athletes in the past were at a disadvantage due to the tracks, nutrition, training and footwear. I believe they could have preformed a lot better if they had today's luxury's. 8/16/2012 12:22:14 pm

Although the overall speed of the individuals is incredible, I still would have guessed that we'd have gotten faster than three seconds over the course of almost two hundred years. Judging from the way it looked, it was going to be more than that so I was surprised that it was only about three seconds! Still pretty cool and very interesting. Leave a Reply. |
